The Jan Juc Hemp House is a standout example of what’s possible when community spirit meets natural building innovation. Set high on Victoria’s Surf Coast, this unique two-storey hempcrete home combines sweeping ocean views with bold architectural choices—most notably, exposed external hemp walls sealed only with Murobond Clear Acrylic Sealer.

What makes this project even more special is the people behind it. With three generations on site—from grandparents to grandchildren—this was more than a build; it was an experience. David’s guidance and supervision enabled volunteers of all ages and skill levels to contribute meaningfully to the process. Friends, family, and visitors dropped in throughout the build, creating a collaborative atmosphere that energised the site from start to finish.
About the Location
Perched between Rocky Point and Bird Rock, Jan Juc is known for its rugged cliffs, sandy dunes, and expansive views of Bass Strait. The setting added a daily dose of inspiration to the hard work. As the second storey rose, the views became even more spectacular—rewarding everyone’s effort and reaffirming why we build this way.
Technical Detail
The external hempcrete walls were sealed using Murobond’s Clear Acrylic Sealer, a low-VOC, non-yellowing protective coating typically used internally. Its application here is a calculated experiment in performance. The sealer repels water, reduces dirt pickup, and improves washability—buying time while maintaining the raw look of the hemp wall.

- Hempcrete mix (hemp hurd, lime, water)
- Timber stud frame with no bracing ply
- Murobond Clear Acrylic Sealer (matte finish)
- No eaves or external render
- BAL-rated wall system
